Floor protection for painting
For most professional interior painting jobs on fully cured hard flooring, a multi-layer self-adhesive felt roll is more practical than loose plastic or a canvas drop sheet. It stays flatter under normal site use, helps contain paint splashes and does not require tape across the main floor area. The right grade, however, depends on the floor finish, curing status, expected traffic and equipment being used.
Floor Protection® supplies temporary floor protection for painters, maintenance teams and commercial contractors across Australia. Our rolls combine a liquid-resistant face with a self-adhesive felt backing, helping cover rooms and corridors without continually repositioning loose sheets. A good paint job is judged by more than the walls: clients also expect their finished floors to be returned without paint marks, scratches or adhesive residue.
A quality paint finish is only part of the job. Clients also expect their floors and surrounding surfaces to be handed back exactly as they were, clean, undamaged and ready to use.
Without proper floor protection in place, a painting project can go wrong in a number of costly ways. Paint spills and splashes are common, particularly during cutting-in and roller work. We at Floor Protection® see ladder feet and scaffold bases mark or scratch finished flooring.
Left unmanaged, these issues lead to expensive repairs, delayed handovers, and clients who are unhappy with the result, regardless of how good the paint finish itself might be.
Using proper floor protection for painting from the outset demonstrates professionalism and significantly reduces these risks, protecting both the finished floor and your reputation as a contractor.

Which Floor Protection Is Best for a Painting Job?
There is no single product that is right for every project. A short residential repaint does not need the same covering as a multi-storey common-area repaint with ladders, mobile equipment and several trades moving through the building.
Painting situation | Recommended option | Why it suits the job |
Short residential repaint on fully cured floors | A lightweight, economical roll for light traffic, paint preparation and routine repainting
General residential or commercial painting | A more substantial general-purpose option for fully cured hard floors and everyday trade activity
An approved floor system that requires vapour transmission | A breathable construction with a dark-blue working face for compatible applications |
Custom Floor Protection
For larger painting projects, or where a tailored solution is required, including custom colours or branded protection, our team can work with you to develop a custom floor protection product suited to your needs. This option is particularly popular with larger painting companies looking for a more bespoke result. Learn more about custom floor protection. Learn more about custom floor protections
- A balanced comparison
Self-Adhesive Felt, Drop Sheets, Plastic or Board?
Painters have several ways to cover a floor. The best approach depends on how widely the covering must extend and what will travel over it.
Protection method | Best suited to | Important limitation |
Self-adhesive felt roll | Rooms, hallways and active work zones | Requires a compatible, clean, dry and properly cured surface. |
Canvas or fabric drop sheet | Small, closely managed tasks | Can shift, fold or expose gaps as painters and ladders move. |
Plastic sheet | Quick dust screening | Provides little cushioning and may require tape or another fixing method. |
Paper or cardboard | Light work on flat areas | Joints need attention, and the material can tear or weaken if wet. |
Rigid protection board | Concentrated loads and trolley paths | Takes longer to cut and install and may need a compatible layer beneath it. |
For painters moving repeatedly between rooms, a self-adhesive backing helps control movement while overlapping runs create a defined working surface. For heavy equipment, use flexible floor covering as one part of a broader protection plan.
Match the Protection to the Finished Floor
The surface, coating and curing status matter more than the colour of the roll. Clean away grit, confirm compatibility and use the surface-specific guidance below.

Timber and engineered flooring
Confirm the coating is fully cured and approved for covering. Trapped particles can mark the finish under traffic.

Tile, hybrid and vinyl
STD Blue is often the practical choice once the floor, adhesive and associated compounds have reached their required cure.

Marble and natural stone
Porous, honed, sealed and polished stone can respond differently to moisture and adhesives. Check the sealer instructions.

Carpet and stairs
Do not assume a hard-floor covering suits every carpet. Stairs also require careful fitting around nosings and corners.
- Installation method
How to Protect Floors Before Painting
Good results depend on preparation, correct installation and routine site checks, not only the product selected.
01
Confirm the floor is ready
Check the cure time for the floor, adhesive, sealer or coating. Do not rely on touch-dry time alone.
02
Clean and dry the surface
Vacuum or sweep away dust, grit and loose debris, then ensure the floor is completely dry.
03
Complete a patch test
Apply a small section in an inconspicuous location before covering the complete floor.
04
Roll out progressively
Place the self-adhesive felt side down and smooth forward. Do not drag grit across the finish.
05
Overlap adjoining runs
Overlap by approximately 7cm and press the joint flat. Never cut directly against the finished floor.
06
Inspect during the work
Wipe up spills promptly and replace torn, punctured or contaminated sections as required.
07
Remove carefully
Lift steadily and keep reusable sections free from paint, grit and sharp debris before storage.
50m² nominally
Each roll is 1m × 50m. Actual coverage is lower after 7cm overlaps, cuts, stairs and waste. Calculate large projects from the measured work areas or site plan.
Residential, Commercial and Strata Painting
Residential applications include occupied-home repaints, heritage work, new-home finishing and pre-handover touch-ups. Commercial and strata projects often involve longer access routes, several trades and continued use of common areas.
