Fit-out floor protection is a temporary covering installed over a suitable finished floor to reduce exposure to scratches, grit, paint, tracked dirt, spills and trade traffic while interior work continues.
Treat protection as a small work package rather than a last-minute sheet. Identify what needs covering, confirm each surface is ready, select protection by zone and assign responsibility for inspection and removal.

Floor protection during a fit-out is a temporary covering system installed over finished or vulnerable flooring to reduce the risk of damage while construction and finishing work continues.
Depending on the stage of the project, protection may be needed over; timber flooring, tiles, vinyl flooring, hybrid flooring, laminate, selected finished concrete surfaces, stairs and access routes, Corridors and shared circulation areas
Simply putting down a few loose sheets of plastic or cardboard does not necessarily create effective fit-out floor protection.
A floor may look complete while joiners, painters, electricians, data installers, cleaners and furniture crews still need access before handover.

Install with the handover in mind
Six practical steps help keep the covering effective from installation through removal.

Confirm readiness
Check curing, moisture, contamination and existing damage. Obtain approval before covering newly laid, sealed or coated flooring.

Clean the route
Remove sand, screws and sharp fragments. Inspect trolley wheels so debris is not carried onto the area.

Plan direction
Map traffic, doorways and access. Long runs suit open offices; smaller sections may suit compact tenancies.

Roll and overlap
Place felt-side down, smooth forward and overlap neighbouring runs by approximately 7 cm.

Inspect daily
Check busy routes and inspect after large deliveries. Replace torn, contaminated, wet or insecure sections.

Remove carefully
Peel back slowly without dragging contamination across the uncovered floor. Store reusable material clean and dry.

Every standard roll is 1 m wide and 50 m long. Measure the area actually being covered and allow for 7 cm overlaps, irregular rooms and waste. Complex projects may be ordered by floor, tenancy or programme stage.
