Why Mercury?
A lighter roll for jobs that do not need a heavy-duty cover
Not every project needs the thickest material in the range. Mercury is intended for controlled, light-duty work where speed, neat presentation and sensible cost matter. It combines the covering, grip and overlap method in one easy-to-handle roll.
Set up with less taping
Place the adhesive felt side onto a suitable clean, dry floor, then smooth the roll forward. Runs overlap by about 7cm, removing the need to tape each seam to the floor.
Contain light site mess
The PE working face helps manage dust, tracked dirt, paint splashes and minor liquid spills. The non-woven layer also provides light cushioning during normal indoor trade activity.
Keep the covering settled
The self-adhesive backing reduces the creeping, folding and loose edges common with unsecured sheets. That means less time straightening the protection while the job is underway.
Leave a tidy handover
On an appropriate fully cured and patch-tested finish, Mercury is designed to lift cleanly. Usable sections can be carefully rolled for another light-duty area or project.
Three layers with a total weight of 140gsm
Mercury is not a loose drop sheet or a thin single-layer plastic film. Its construction begins with a 20gsm PE outer film that forms the white working face. A 20gsm lamination layer joins that face to a 100gsm self-adhesive non-woven backing.
Each layer has a practical role. The PE face helps resist common paint and water splashes. The lamination keeps the material operating as one sheet. The softer backing provides temporary grip and light cushioning, allowing the protection to sit flat without ordinary floor tape.
Suitable surfaces
Temporary protection for fully cured hard floors
Mercury can suit many hard finishes and carpets found in homes, apartments and commercial interiors. The key conditions are fully cured, clean and dry. Always follow the flooring or coating manufacturer’s instructions and patch-test an inconspicuous area before covering the full floor.
Sealed Timber
Use only after the coating and substrate have reached their stated cure time. Avoid fresh coatings and unknown finishes.
Tile and stone
Suitable for dry, established surfaces. Newly installed tile, grout or stone may need a breathable protection grade
Vinyl flooring
Check that flooring adhesive is fully cured and that temporary adhesive coverings are permitted by the manufacturer.
Carpet
Keep carpet clean and protected with effective floor protection. Avoid the unnecessary cost of replacing your carpet.
Simple installation
Plan on about 46.5m² before cuts and waste
A full 1m × 50m roll contains a nominal 50m² of material. With a 7cm overlap between parallel runs, the theoretical effective coverage is about 46.5m² before allowing for room shapes, stairs, trimming and offcuts..
Confirm the floor
Check that the substrate, flooring adhesive, grout, coating and finish are fully cured. Review manufacturer guidance and test a small hidden area.
Clean the surface
Vacuum or sweep away grit that could become trapped underneath. The floor must be dry, because moisture can affect both the finish and the backing.
Roll and overlap
Place the self-adhesive felt side down. Unroll in a straight line, smooth progressively and overlap the next run by approximately 7cm.
Inspect and remove
Check the covering during the job, especially after spills or heavy traffic. When work finishes, peel it back steadily and roll clean sections for reuse.
How Mercury compares with our other floor-protection rolls
GSM describes material weight, but it is not the only selection factor. Consider site traffic, impact exposure, project length, expected spills and whether a new floor still needs to release moisture.

Where Mercury fits
Our value-focused grade for lighter indoor work
Mercury is the roll we would usually discuss when a painter, maintenance contractor or renovator wants a reliable self-adhesive covering without paying for protection the job does not need. It is well suited floor protection to repainting, touch-ups, apartment maintenance, display preparation, light office work and shorter fit-out tasks on compatible cured floors.
For longer projects, heavier trade traffic, frequent equipment movement or a greater risk of impact, step up to STD Blue 160gsm or Heavy Duty 260gsm. For recently installed flooring that must continue releasing moisture, the breathable Anti-Slippery grade is generally the more relevant product to investigate.
This honest matching matters. A lower-cost roll is good value only when it suits the surface and work taking place above it. If the conditions are unclear, tell us the floor type, installation date, coating status, expected traffic and project duration before ordering.

Mercury 140gsm FAQs
Practical answers for painters, builders, renovators and trade buyers choosing a light-duty adhesive floor protection roll.
What is Mercury 140gsm floor protection?
Mercury is a light-duty, self-adhesive floor protection roll designed for painting, maintenance and shorter renovation work. Its white felt layer helps absorb minor impact, while the liquid-resistant top film protects the covered surface from paint splashes, dust, dirt and general site traffic.
Is Mercury a good option for professional painters?
Yes. Mercury is particularly suited to painters completing residential repaints, touch-ups, maintenance work and other light-duty projects. It creates a more stable working surface than loose plastic sheeting and can reduce the time spent taping down conventional coverings.
Does Mercury need floor tape?
Mercury normally does not require floor tape because the underside has a self-adhesive backing. Roll it out smoothly and overlap adjoining lengths by approximately 7cm. Tape may still be useful around unusual edges or transitions, but should not be applied directly to a finished floor unless the flooring manufacturer approves it.
Will the backing leave sticky residue?
Mercury is designed for clean removal without leaving sticky adhesive residue when it is installed on a clean, fully cured and compatible surface. Conditions vary, so always test a small, hidden area before covering the full floor and follow the flooring manufacturer’s protection instructions.
Can Mercury be used on newly installed flooring?
Mercury should only be installed after the flooring, coating and adhesive have fully cured. It is not breathable, so it should not be used where a new floor still needs to release moisture or vapour. For those applications, consider our breathable Anti-Slippery floor protection and confirm suitability with the flooring manufacturer.
How much area does one roll cover?
One Mercury roll measures 1m × 50m and provides a nominal coverage of 50m². Allowing for the recommended 7cm overlaps, cuts and site conditions, the practical coverage is generally closer to 46.5m² per roll.
Is Mercury reusable and recyclable?
Mercury may be reused when it is removed carefully and the felt and adhesive backing remain clean and undamaged. The material is recyclable where a suitable facility accepts mixed construction textiles and plastic laminates. Recycling options differ between councils and commercial waste providers, so check locally before disposal.
Do you supply Mercury at wholesale quantities?
Yes. Floor Protection® is a wholesale supplier serving painters, builders, flooring contractors, renovators and resellers across Australia.
