Floor protection
during renovations.
Renovation floor protection is a temporary covering used to shield finished floors from scratches, spills, dust, dirt and everyday trade traffic. It is installed before work begins and remains in place for the required stage of the project.
Even a small bathroom or kitchen renovation can put floors throughout the property at risk. Workers still need to carry tools, remove waste and move materials between the entrance and the work area. In many cases, the access route receives more traffic than the room being renovated.
Floor Protection® is a specialist wholesale supplier of self-adhesive temporary floor protection for builders, renovators, trades and resellers across Australia. Our standard rolls measure 1m × 50m, with options for light decorating, general refurbishment and more demanding work.
Most renovation damage is not caused by one major accident. It builds up through ordinary site activity.
A small piece of plaster, metal or tile trapped under a ladder can scratch timber or vinyl. A small demolition debris carried under work boots can mark a polished surface. Water, grout, adhesive, silicone and paint can stain floors if they are not cleaned immediately.
If you don't put any floor protection in place, the risks include:
- Scratches from tools, ladders and gear all over the place
- Paint spills and plaster dust getting all over the floor
- Water spots from bathroom or kitchen work that just won't go away
- Stains from adhesives, grout, or silicone leaving a lasting mark
- Dirt and mud tracking its way all over the property
- Damage caused by moving appliances, cupboards, and furniture on and off the floor
- Trip hazards from loose plastic, paper or cardboard everywhere
Modern self-adhesive floor protection gives renovators a cleaner, safer and more professional option.

- THE PRODUCT RANGE
Our Renovation Floor Protection Range
LIGHT WORK
Mercury
140 gsm · White
Mercury is the lightest standard option in our range. It is suitable for painting, decorating, inspections, handover preparation and shorter renovation work with low to moderate activity.
Its lighter construction makes it economical and easy to handle, but it should not be selected where heavy equipment, demolition materials or intensive traffic are expected.
General-Purpose Starting Point
STD Blue
160 gsm · Blue
STD Blue is our general-purpose renovation floor protection. It offers a useful balance between weight, protection and cost for home renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and regular construction activity.
For contractors looking for one practical product for everyday renovation work, STD Blue is often the starting point.
Documented Vapour Transfer
Anti-Slippery
160 gsm · Dark blue
Anti-Slippery combines a breathable construction with a textured, grip-focused top surface. It is particularly useful for recently finished floors, occupied properties, stairs, corridors and frequently used access routes.
It should be selected when breathability is more important than the additional cushioning provided by Heavy Duty, such as new flooring.
BUSY MULTI-TRADE WORK
Heavy Duty
260 gsm · Red
Heavy Duty contains a heavier felt layer for more demanding renovation and construction conditions. It is suited to commercial refurbishment, intensive site traffic, cabinet installation and projects where additional cushioning is required.
For stairs, shared walkways or flooring that needs to release moisture vapour, Anti-Slippery should be considered alongside Heavy Duty.
Renovation work or requirement | Product to consider | Selection note |
Light painting, touch-ups and short maintenance work | Economical protection for controlled, lighter activity
General home, kitchen and bathroom renovations | General-purpose option for regular trade traffic
Compatible floors requiring vapour transmission | Breathable option; confirm the floor is ready to cover
More demanding refurbishment and material movement | Heavier felt construction; assess additional load protection
Branding or non-standard specifications | Confirm specifications, quantities and lead time |
New flooring must complete the required curing period before covering. Breathable protection does not make an uncured coating or adhesive ready for use. Sharp debris, concentrated loads and heavy wheeled equipment may require an appropriate rigid protective layer as well as a roll.
Match the Protection to Your Floor Finish

Timber and coated floors
Confirm that the finish has cured and that the flooring manufacturer permits self-adhesive coverings. Where vapour transmission is required, discuss Anti-Slippery rather than selecting by material weight alone. Patch-test an inconspicuous area first. See our Timber protection guidance →

Ceramic and porcelain tiles
STD Blue is the starting point for general renovation traffic over compatible, dry tiles. Remove loose grit and tile fragments before installation, and ensure grout and adhesives have cured. See our Tile protection guidance →
Hybrid and vinyl flooring
Check the flooring brand’s instructions, especially restrictions on adhesive-backed coverings. A clean, dry surface and a successful patch test matter more than choosing by colour or thickness. Tell us whether the floor is established or newly installed. See our Hybrid protection guidance →
Marble, terrazzo and natural stone
Check the stone, sealer and any moisture-related requirements before selecting protection. Avoid trapping grit or spills against the surface. Use our marble and natural stone protection guide for more specific considerations.
Floor Protection for All Types of Renovation Projects

Home Renovation Floor Protection
Whole-home renovations can expose timber, tiles, hybrid flooring and vinyl to weeks of trade traffic. Entrances, hallways, living areas and stairs often become the main routes for workers and material deliveries.
Cover these routes before the first stage of work. If the renovation will continue for several weeks, inspect the protection regularly and replace any section that becomes torn, saturated or heavily contaminated.
For most general home renovations, STD Blue 160gsm provides a practical balance. Anti-Slippery 160gsm is worth considering in occupied homes, on stairs floor protection or where a breathable covering is required.

Floor Protection for Bathroom Renovation
Bathroom work produces water, tile fragments, and grout. Although the bathroom may have a small floor area, debris can quickly spread through the rest of the property.
Protect the complete access path and check edges and joins regularly. The top surface of the roll resists common site spills, but water can still reach the floor through an open seam, damaged section or unprotected edge.
For a typical bathroom renovation, STD Blue is suitable for everyday access. Heavy Duty can be used where demolition waste or heavier materials are being transported. Anti-Slippery can be selected for occupied properties, stairs and floors where breathability is important.

Floor Protection for Kitchen Renovation
Kitchen projects involve more than painting and cabinet installation. Old cabinetry must be removed, new units carried inside, appliances repositioned and plumbing or electrical work completed.
STD Blue suits general kitchen renovations. Heavy Duty provides additional cushioning where appliances, cabinetry and heavier equipment are being moved. Anti-Slippery is another option for busy access routes or when the flooring requires a breathable covering.
Floor protection reduces surface damage, but it is not a substitute for lifting equipment correctly. Heavy appliances should not be dragged directly over any temporary covering.

Floor Protection for Office Renovation
Commercial refurbishment generally brings longer project periods, more workers and more material movement. Reception areas, corridors, lift access points and operational zones may also remain in use while the renovation proceeds.
Heavy Duty 260gsm is designed for more demanding conditions. Anti-Slippery 160gsm should be considered where breathability, stairs or frequent pedestrian movement are key concerns.
For trolleys, mobile platforms or concentrated point loads, a temporary roll may need to be combined with an appropriate rigid protective layer. The protection system should be selected according to the equipment and loads expected on site.

Floor Protection for Commercial Building Renovation
Commercial renovations are a whole different ball game - more feet on the floor, bigger equipment rolling around and more stress on the site overall. Damage to those floors in retail stores, hospitality venues, medical centres, schools, strata buildings and commercial offices can be a costly nightmare to fix.
Our range includes some seriously heavy-duty options for more punishing commercial projects. They're designed to give your floors some extra protection but still be easy to slip in and out - no fuss, no muss.

Floor Protection for Strata Renovation
Apartment renovations often require protection beyond the individual unit. Building managers or strata committees always expect contractors to protect corridors, lift floors, lobbies, stair landings and other shared access areas.
Plan the route before materials arrive. Protection should be neat, stable and inspected throughout the work so that damaged or loose sections do not create a problem for residents.
Anti-Slippery is a strong choice for shared walkways and stairs because of its grip-focused surface. For heavier work, Heavy Duty can be used where extra cushioning is the main requirement.
Always confirm the building’s access and protection requirements before starting.

How to Install, Maintain and Remove Floor Protection
01
Confirm compatibility
Check the floor, coating and adhesive requirements. Complete a small-area test before covering the whole surface.
02
Clean and dry the floor
Vacuum grit and sharp debris. A small fragment trapped underneath can still scratch a finish when someone walks over it.
03
Plan the layout
Cover access routes, turning points and work zones. Allow for doors, stair edges and transitions without leaving loose material.
04
Roll out and overlap
Place the self-adhesive felt side down, smooth progressively and overlap adjacent runs by approximately 7cm, following the selected product’s instructions. Normal installation avoids taping directly to the finished floor.
05
Inspect during the job
Clear debris and spills promptly. Replace torn or heavily contaminated sections and investigate any moisture underneath.
06
Remove carefully
Clear surface debris first, then peel back steadily. Stop if the covering resists removal or the finish shows a change. Keep dirty material away from the exposed floor.
A useful habit is to check the entrance and main turning points whenever materials are delivered. These areas can deteriorate before the rest of the protection looks worn.
Choose protection using the relevant product information, not a general claim that one roll suits every floor.
Mercury’s published information identifies REACH-compliant materials and SGS RoHS verification. Request the relevant documents when these requirements form part of a project specification. Chemical-testing information should not be treated as evidence of slip resistance, impact performance or compatibility with every finish.
For breathable protection, review the Anti-Slippery documentation. For removal behaviour, consult our removal and residue test and check which products, surfaces and exposure periods were assessed. Test results apply to their stated conditions; an on-site compatibility check remains necessary.

Why Use a Multi-Layer Roll Instead of Loose Paper or Plastic?
Loose paper, thin plastic and ordinary cardboard may provide basic short-term coverage, but they can also tear, shift, absorb water or require considerable taping.
Multi-layer self-gripping protection is easier to roll out across rooms and access routes. It combines a protective top surface with a felt layer and gripping backing, reducing movement while providing a cleaner working surface.
No temporary covering prevents every type of damage. Sharp impacts, concentrated loads and heavy wheeled equipment may require extra protection. The advantage of a multi-layer roll is that it provides a practical foundation that can be matched to the project’s actual conditions.
