Temporary carpet protection creates a removable barrier over carpet during painting, renovation, construction, fit-outs, maintenance and moving. Temporary carpet covering helps keep dust, dirt, paint splashes, moisture and everyday site traffic away from the carpet underneath.

Floor Protection® supplies self-adhesive multi-layer protection in 1m × 50m rolls. Four material grades are available, from economical protection for lighter work to a 260gsm option for demanding commercial sites.

Every carpet and project is different. Before covering a large area, test the product on a small, hidden section and confirm that it is suitable for the carpet fibre, pile and installation period.

Unprotected carpet can collect damage surprisingly quickly on a busy site. Fine plaster dust settles into the pile, wet shoes track dirt between rooms, and paint can be difficult or impossible to remove once it dries.

A properly selected and installed covering can help protect carpet against

  • Paint droplets and light splashes
  • Plaster, sanding and drilling dust
  • Dirt carried in on work boots
  • Minor moisture exposure
  • Scuffs from regular foot traffic
  • Light tool and material movement
  • General mess during moving or maintenance

The top surface of our multi-layer products is waterproof.

Our Anti-Slippery 160 gsm protection is the preferred option when a floor has been recently installed, sanded or coated and the installer has allowed it to be covered. Its water-vapour transmission rate was independently tested to ASTM E96/E96M-24a, Procedure B, at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, with a result of 1,176 g/m² per 24 hours. The result gives specifiers and contractors a measurable figure rather than a vague "breathable" claim.

How a multi-layer system work for protecting carpet

How to Cover Carpet During Building Work

Start by vacuuming the carpet and checking that it is completely dry. Test the protection on a small, hidden section before covering the whole room, particularly on wool, natural-fibre, loop-pile or recently cleaned carpet.

Lay each run without stretching the material and overlap adjoining sections by approximately 7cm. Check entrances, joins and busy walkways during the project, and replace any section that becomes torn or heavily contaminated.

For detailed instructions covering preparation, overlaps, stairs, inspection and removal, see our guide on how to lay down floor protection.

Applications for Temporary Carpet Protection

Cover carpet before opening paint containers, sanding or starting preparation. Pay particular attention to doorways, skirting lines and routes between the work area and the vehicle.
Protect bedrooms and living areas even when work is limited to a kitchen or bathroom. Tradies frequently carry dust through connecting rooms that are not part of the original work zone.
Offices, hotels, shops and shared buildings often remain partly occupied during a fit-out. Clear, consistently covered access routes help separate normal building movement from the work area.
Temporary covering can reduce dirt and scuffing along entry routes. It does not replace lifting equipment, furniture pads or load-spreading boards where heavy items are involved.
Electricians, plumbers, air-conditioning technicians and maintenance teams can use temporary covering to protect the route between the entrance and the service area.

Stairs require more attention because each tread, riser and edge changes the direction of the material. Poorly secured coverings can create a trip risk.

For carpeted stairs:

  • Test the product on the carpet first.
  • Use separate, accurately cut sections where needed.
  • Keep nosings, corners and transitions smooth.
  • Do not create thick overlaps on the leading edge of a tread.
  • Inspect the staircase throughout the working day.
  • Keep emergency paths and access routes clear.
  • Replace any lifted or damaged section immediately.

Anti-slippery 160gsm may be considered for access areas where additional attention to surface grip is needed. However, no floor covering removes the need for good installation, housekeeping and site safety procedures.

For public buildings, schools, healthcare facilities and occupied commercial sites, include the temporary covering in the project’s risk assessment.

FAQs about carpet floor shields

1What is the best temporary carpet protection?
For most building and renovation work, we recommend self-adhesive multi-layer protection. It is a step forward from loose plastic, cardboard and old-style drop sheets, mainly because it stays in place without needing tape across the carpet. The layered material also gives the carpet some cushioning, while the waterproof top catches paint splashes, dust and dirty footprints. Choose the product weight based on the level of traffic, and test a small hidden section of carpet before covering the whole area.
2How long is temporary carpet protection good for?
Most temporary carpet protection products have a life of several weeks but it all comes down to site conditions and what the manufacturer says.
3Will using carpet protection damage my carpet?
High-quality carpet protection is designed to come off cleanly, no harm done, if it's used right.
4Is temporary carpet protection waterproof?
Our products have waterproof upper surfaces. Use adequate overlaps and clean spills promptly.
5Can you use carpet protection on stairs?
Yep. There are plenty of temporary carpet protection products that are suitable for stairs, but you gotta make sure you put it on right.
6Is temporary carpet protection reusable?
The products are reusable when removed in suitable condition, but reuse depends on cleanliness, adhesive performance and damage sustained during the first installation. Do not reinstall contaminated material where grit could contact the carpet.
7Who can use carpet protection?
Well pretty much anyone really - builders, painters, renovators, removalists, facility managers, property managers, schools, healthcare places, and even homeowners can all benefit from using some temporary carpet protection.
8Will adhesive carpet protection leave residue?
A suitable product installed on clean, dry and compatible carpet should be removable, but the result can be affected by carpet fibre, treatments, temperature, contamination and installation duration. Complete a hidden-area test instead of relying on a universal residue-free claim.
9How much carpet does one roll cover?
Each roll measures 1m × 50m, giving 50m² of nominal material. Actual coverage will be lower after allowing for approximately 7cm overlaps, cut sections, stairs and waste.
