The best temporary protection for a timber floor is a multi-layer, self-adhesive covering selected to suit the condition of the floor. On established, fully cured timber, the required grade mainly depends on site traffic and the length of the job. On newly laid, sanded or coated timber, breathability becomes the first consideration, and the floor installer or coating manufacturer should approve when the surface can be covered.

Floor Protection® supplies four grades of temporary timber floor protection in practical 1 m × 50 m rolls. The felt underside provides a soft layer against the floor, the protective top layer helps contain dust and everyday spills, and the low-tack backing holds the roll in place without taping directly to the timber. For floors that still need to release moisture vapour, our Anti-Slippery 160 gsm roll has a tested breathable top film.

We supply builders, painters, flooring contractors, renovators and resellers at wholesale prices, with delivery across Australia.

As a wholesale supplier of temporary timber floor protection, we stock a range of solutions built for different site conditions: light-duty for quick jobs, heavy-duty for high-traffic sites, and breathable systems for safety-critical environments.

New timber floors are often protected too early because other trades need to return to the room. That is exactly when product choice matters most. A non-breathable sheet can restrict vapour movement and may contribute to uneven curing, trapped moisture or changes in the appearance of a sensitive coating.

Our Anti-Slippery 160 gsm protection is the preferred option when a floor has been recently installed, sanded or coated and the installer has allowed it to be covered. Its water-vapour transmission rate was independently tested to ASTM E96/E96M-24a, Procedure B, at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, with a result of 1,176 g/m² per 24 hours. The result gives specifiers and contractors a measurable figure rather than a vague "breathable" claim.

How a multi-layer system work for protecting timber floor

How to Install Timber Floor Protection

  1. Confirm the floor and coating are cured or approved for covering.
  2. Vacuum carefully. Do not leave grit, screws or plaster fragments beneath the roll.
  3. Test a small area for adhesion and clean removal.
  4. Roll out the felt side against the floor, keeping the material flat and overlapping adjoining runs by about 7 cm.
  5. Inspect the covering during the job and replace any section that becomes torn, heavily contaminated or wet underneath.

Avoid applying strong construction tape directly to the timber finish. For detailed cutting, overlap and removal instructions, see how to lay down a floor protection roll.

Fire-Tested Temporary Timber Floor Protection

While physical floor protection is the main priority for most projects, some commercial and high-specification sites also consider fire performance and compliance standards.

This is where professionally tested temporary timber floor protection becomes a major advantage.

Our self-adhesive floor protection range has undergone independent laboratory testing for:
  • combustibility
  • smoke production
  • flame spread
  • critical heat flux performance
Please note: fire rated is a custom order

Fire Safety Rating: Class B1 (B-s1)

classification under the GB 8624-2012 standard.

In practical terms, this means the material is classified as flame-retardant or difficult to ignite.

The testing also recorded a Critical Heat Flux result exceeding:

Critical Heat Flux (CHF) Performance

  • Standard Tested: GB/T 11785-2005 (Reaction to fire tests for floorings).
  • Requirement for Rating: >8.0 kW/m2.
  • Test Result: > 11.0 kW/m2.
The Benefit: Critical Heat Flux measures the level of radiant heat energy required to keep a flame burning along the floor cover. With this result, this cover significantly exceeds the baseline safety requirement. It demands a much higher heat threshold to sustain any combustion, offering superior localized protection for the timber underneath.

Advanced Smoke Control (s1 Rating)

  • Requirement for Rating: <750% x min.
  • Test Result: 13.1% x min (PASS).

The Benefit: In commercial construction, smoke inhalation is often a greater hazard than the flame itself. The s1 suffix is the highest classification for smoke control, proving that this temporary cover releases an exceptionally low, negligible amount of smoke if exposed to extreme heat

Direct Flammability & Flame Spread

  • Standard Tested: GB/T 8626-2007 (Test method of flammability for building materials).
  • Requirement: Flame spread within 20 seconds must remain under 150mm.
  • Test Result: <150mm (PASS).

The Benefit: If exposed directly to a localized flame edge, the material self-extinguishes quickly and restricts the flame spread safely within tight, manageable boundaries.

Which Floor Protection Is Right for Your Timber Floor?

Answer a few quick questions about your timber floor and project. We will suggest the most suitable option from our temporary floor protection range.

Question 1 of 6 17%
What is the current condition of the timber floor?

This is particularly important because newly coated or curing timber may need a breathable protection system.

What type of project are you completing?
How much traffic will pass over the protected floor?
What is the main risk to the timber floor?
Where will the floor protection be installed?
How long will the timber floor remain covered?

FAQs about Timber Floor Protection

1How long can timber floor protection stay down before it needs to be replaced?
This depends on the product and traffic level. Light-duty protection is typically suited to short jobs of a few days, while heavy-duty felt/fleece systems are built to withstand several weeks of continuous site traffic without breaking down.
2Is there any residue on timber floors after removing self-adhesive timber floor protection?
Our quality self-adhesive floor protection is designed to remove cleanly without leaving adhesive residue, provided it's installed on a clean, dry surface and removed within the recommended timeframe.
3Can timber floor protection be used on freshly sanded or curing floors?
Yes. Non-breathable coverings can trap moisture against a curing floor and cause damage, so a system that allows vapour transmission is important for freshly finished timber.
4Is fire-tested floor protection required on all timber floor sites?
Fire compliance requirements vary by project type and jurisdiction. Commercial and higher-specification sites are more likely to require documented fire performance data, which is why independently lab-tested products are worth specifying for those projects.
5Can temporary protection be used on a newly laid timber floor?
Yes, but only after the flooring installer or coating manufacturer says the surface may be covered. Where vapour transmission is still important, use a breathable product such as Anti-Slippery 160 gsm and test a small area first.
6Can the same protection be used on timber stairs?
Yes, when the finish is compatible and the material is cut and secured correctly. Stairs need careful fitting so edges cannot lift under foot traffic. Use a stable anti-slip option and inspect the nosings regularly.
