--- The short answer

What is builders floor protection?

Builders floor protection is a temporary covering installed over a suitable finished floor while construction or fit-out work continues. It helps isolate the surface from tracked grit, dust, paint splashes, minor spills and everyday trade traffic.

On a real project, flooring is rarely the final activity. Cabinet installers may still be moving components through a hallway, electricians may need ladders in finished rooms, and painters may return for defects. A reliable covering gives those trades a defined working surface and reduces the chance that a small incident turns into a repair, programme delay or awkward handover discussion.

  • Self-adhesive felt helps runs stay settled without taping the finished floor.
  • A protective face helps contain common site dirt and minor liquid exposure.
  • Multiple grades let the builder match protection to traffic, floor condition and project stage.

Which construction floor protection should you use?

There is no honest “best” roll for every building site. The right grade depends on what is happening above the floor, whether the floor needs vapour transmission, and how long the area will remain in service. GSM is useful, but it is only one part of that decision.

Where it fits in a construction project

The best time to think about protection is before flooring is handed over to the next trade, not after the first scratch. Treat it as a small work package with an install date, inspection responsibility and removal point.

Choose a grade and estimate your rolls

Use these results as a planning starting point. Irregular rooms, stairs, columns, detailed cuts and staged replacement can increase consumption.

Which Floor Protection Is Right for Your Project?

Answer a few quick questions and we’ll recommend a suitable product and estimate how many 50 m² rolls your project may require.

Enter the combined floor area for all rooms, corridors and access areas.

The estimate uses approximately 46.5m² effective coverage per roll after a 7cm longitudinal overlap, then adds the selected waste allowance. For a detailed estimate including stairs, use the full floor protection roll calculator.

Further details

Builders floor protection is the best temporary surface covering that builders use them to protect timber, hybrid, laminate, vinyl and tiled flooring from damage during construction, renovation and fit-out jobs.

Builders floor protection is typically installed as a shield to protect surfaces from scratches, dirt, spills, moisture, dropped tools and constant foot traffic.

Our temporary floor protection is the new generation of temporary floor covering and it's made from multiple layers with a self-adhesive backing, so it stays securely in place without relying on extensive taping.

Builders use self-adhesive Floor Protection® products to reduce the risk of costly repairs, maintain a tidy, professional site, and hand over a pristine, undamaged space to the client.

Some Australian builders may also recognise this type of product through retail options such as Builders Edge Temporary Floor Protection. Floor Protection® supplies an independent range of self-adhesive floor protection rolls for residential construction, commercial projects, renovations and fit-outs.

Protecting your floors through new home construction, renovations or commercial fit-outs is a genuine challenge, which is why we've developed pro-grade temporary floor protection built specifically for the conditions of the Australian construction industry.

At Floor Protection®, we've supported Australian builders, contractors, project managers and resellers for years. Whether you're constructing a new home, renovating an existing property, managing a commercial fit-out or running a large-scale build, our floor protection systems keep finished surfaces safe until the job is complete.

Flooring is usually laid before a project is really finished. Of course that gets those construction schedules moving forward a bit better but it's also a major contributor to the risk of floors getting damaged, and that can be seriously costly to fix.

People like painters, electricians, plumbers, and cabinet installer still end up working on top of the flooring after it has been installed. And if you don't do anything to stop it, soon your finished floor will be looking rough from all the foot traffic, tools and equipment being dragged over it, dust, paint splatters, moisture and building materials all damaging the floor.

Our Floor Protection® reduces the risk of scratches, dents, stains and costly repairs, while helping keep the site looking clean and professional throughout the remaining works.

Paper, cardboard and plastic sheeting simply don't hold up in these conditions. Self-adhesive floor protection stays in place very well once installed.

--- Install it properly

Four steps before the next trade walks in

A good roll cannot compensate for grit trapped underneath, an uncured coating or a blade dragged across the finished surface. Preparation and routine inspection are part of the system.

How to install floor protection

Step 1

Confirm the floor

Check the floor manufacturer’s cure time and temporary-covering instructions. Make sure the surface is compatible, dry and ready to be covered.

Step 2

Remove grit

Sweep and vacuum thoroughly, especially at entries. A hard particle beneath any covering can mark the floor when traffic passes over it.

Step 3

Role and overlap

Place the felt side down, smooth the run forward and overlap the next run by about 7cm. Cut on a protective board, never directly on the floor.

Step 4

Inspect and replace

Check entries, joints and busy routes during the job. Remove any torn or grit-contaminated section rather than letting damage travel underneath.

11Is breathable floor protection always a necessity?
Breathable floor protection is definitely worth considering if you will have a surface that's still giving off a bit of residual moisture - that way you get airflow through, without the risk of damage from the stuff you're protecting.
12How long is it okay to leave temporary floor protection in place for?
To be honest, it can vary from job to job, depending on the specific site and the materials you're working with - so just be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, check on the protection every now and again, and see how things go from there.
13Can construction floor protection use on stairs?
Yes, you can definitely use self-adhesive floor protection on staircases - considering how those old cardboard or plastic sheets can get all slippery and move around when people walk up and down.
14When is it time to install builder floor protection?
Floor protection will be installed after the flooring surface is complete but before the construction gets going in earnest - that way you can keep your finished flooring safe while the rest of the build is still going on.

No. Builders Edge is a separate product brand available through retailers such as Bunnings. Floor Protection® is an independent Australian supplier offering its own range of self-adhesive temporary floor protection products. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Builders Edge or Bunnings.
