What Is Waste Allowance?
During installation, floor protection is often trimmed around walls, doorways, kitchen islands, cabinetry, columns, and other obstacles. A waste allowance helps account for this unavoidable material usage.
As a general guide:
- 5% Waste Allowance - Simple open areas with minimal cutting
- 10% Waste Allowance - Standard residential renovations and painting projects
- 15% Waste Allowance - Complex layouts with multiple rooms and obstacles
- 20% Waste Allowance - Large commercial projects or highly detailed floor plans
Why Is Sheet Overlap Important?
Most installers slightly overlap adjoining sheets to minimise gaps and provide better protection across the floor surface.
Typical overlap options include:
- No overlap (we never recommend to lay down the floor guards side-by-side)
- 50mm overlap (Good for low traffic areas, such as only painting job)
- 100mm overlap (Perfect for medium and high traffic areas)
While overlap improves protection performance, it also increases material consumption. The calculator automatically factors this into the quantity estimate based on the traffic in your job site.
Stair Protection Requirements
Staircases often require more material than flat floor areas due to treads, risers, and landings.
We've simplified the calculation process here, so you can just pop in the number of stairs you need to protect, figure roughly around each one taking up about 0.5m² of floor space.
This provides a practical estimate for most residential and commercial staircases.
